Posted - Nov 03 2009 : 6:14:48 PM Lerner is going to trust Bernie. At least I hope. Any Mangini fans out there. I wanted to cry when he was hired. It looks like no fun on Sundays for awhile. Guess I'll just root for the class acts.
by the way Spikes eye gouge was shameful - he could blind somebody. he got off easy (1/2 a game). |

Posted - Dec 26 2009 : 6:57:53 PM Well, the Browns got their man, and I'll go on record as saying. I agree with the hire. Mike Holgrem instantly brings the Browns much needed creditability, and a respected voice. Be interesting as to what changes will be made.

Posted - Nov 25 2009 : 9:32:41 PM Ben, I've never been a fair weather fan. Someday (hopefully before I die) the Browns are going to reward their die-hard fans. I mean you're bound to get it right someday, even if it's only by luck.
Gotta give the Browns credit though, even though they've only won one game and look woefully outclassed on any given Sunday, they continue to remain relevant. Nearly every day they are in the sporting news, although it's usually for a not so enviable reason.
I believe Mangini will be relieved of his duties by the new GM. Unfortunately he proved he learned nothing from his time in NY, and ability to judge talent is suspect at best.
In hindsight they should of hired an experience GM and coach. This was not a job for a first time GM, especially one that was hired by his coach. Heck, I think bringing Marty Schottemheimer back for a couple of years would of been a great move. Of course, it's much easier to say this after watching the thing blow up.

Posted - Nov 25 2009 : 12:24:07 PM hey gun - good to see you still hanging in with the browns. I like the big tuna too. Anything with him will have to wait until the seasons over. Brownies are big mess right now. only a handful of real players. if the browns get the big tuna i would love to travel up to watch a practice next summer. |

Posted - Nov 24 2009 : 10:18:38 PM In my opinion Bill Parcels is the greatest mind in the NFL today. He has turned around every program of which he was involved (NY Giants, New England, NY Jets, Dallas and Miami). Although he was a great field manager, I believe he's even more astute behind the scenes as a President/GM. The absolute best move Randy Lerner could make would be to lure Parcells away from Miami, and give him complete and total control over the Browns.
If by any slim chance this happens, (I'll have to see it before I believe it) I predict the Parcells led Browns would win a minimum of 8 games next year, along with winning back some of the respect and creditability that have lost over the last several years.

Posted - Nov 24 2009 : 9:57:09 PM Rumor mill has Bill Parcells may want the challenge in Cleveland. That may be the reason they are slow to interview Holmgrem (another rumor has Holmgrem returning to green bay). |

Posted - Nov 11 2009 : 11:45:18 AM Gun: I've been a Browns fan for decades but don't always have time to keep up on their latest moves (shenanigans?). Really like your analysis and hope you'll keep doing it! |

Posted - Nov 10 2009 : 07:27:17 AM Radio talk has the browns wanting to talk to Holgrem. He is proven - why not? |

Posted - Nov 08 2009 : 8:04:07 PM If this true, it would be a start in the right direction. Not sure Holmgrem would take the job, however there is no way in heck he would even consider it unless he had full control. I'm guessing current head coach Eric Mangini would fight this move tooth and nail, knowing he would not be able to intimidate or control Holmgren. Could get interesting.........

Posted - Nov 08 2009 : 5:06:31 PM Gun - you love your football and the points on Winslow are good. I still think the Edwards deal was not good - I wanted draft picks too. I'll be back to comment more when we get more news and something happens. |

Posted - Nov 08 2009 : 1:36:22 PM Kellen Winslow's past injuries rendered his physical condition much older than his 26 years, and caused him to miss 6 games in 2008. In fact in his career, he had only played in a full season twice. He couldn't or wouldn't block and had lost a couple of steps over the last couple of seasons. He was also pushing hard for a new contract and would of most likely of been a hold out. He did have great hands, but with all the other intangibles working against him, this alone did not justify keeping him around. The second round pick they received in the deal they used to select Mohamed Massaquoi who has shown flashes of becoming a solid number 2, if not number 1 receiver. Time will tell if it was a good deal, but for now I am supportive of it, and would do it again.
As for Braylon, he wanted out of Cleveland. He continued to make stupid mistakes along with doing little things to be an irritant. He always had problems with his hands, but there was no denying he was extremely talented. However, again the potential doesn't outweigh the lack of effort and clubhouse dysfunction Braylon brought with him. The Browns received a number 3 pick, with possible escalators turning it into a number 2 for him along with a couple of serviceable special teamers (I would of insisted on draft picks and not current players). Another telling fact is, Braylon was dangled in preseason and no one offered any more than a number 3 pick for him. I think the consensus in the NFL is Braylon and his drops are not worth the trouble. Though I am not happy to trade the 3rd pick of 2004 draft for a 3rd or possibly a second round pick, I agree with the deal. Give me a player with lesser talent with a bigger heart and a desire to perform any day over someone like Braylon.

Posted - Nov 08 2009 : 12:45:28 PM Edwards and Winslow were like 5th and 6th picks in the draft. A spot where one would hope to land a pro bowl type player. trading them for special teams players is not my idea of a good trade regardless of their cubhouse lackings. I think we got a second rounder for winslow - only time will tell how that pick turns out.
gun you are also correct about people thinking twice about going to cleveland. Coaches as well as players - in the past the browns were considered a great place for a player to be considering how the community treated them so well. the writers should love all this. They can write articles without any real knowledge of the game - like some of the airhead talk radio FM 97.1 puts out. |

Posted - Nov 07 2009 : 6:11:51 PM I don't think even Bill Gates has enough money to lure Ozzie Newsome from Baltimore, especially after what happened to George Kokinos. Randy Lerner is going to have a tough sell to any established GM, after the decade of dysfunction we've experienced.
Three names I have heard mentioned for head of football operations are former Giants General Manager Ernie Accorsi, former Packers and Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren and former Packers General Manager Ron Wolf. I do not believe Accorsi or Wolf would consider full time employment, which is unfortunate as either would be an excellent choice. However I could see Holmgrem considering the idea, on his terms. Mangini would most likely be fired if any of these respected football minds came to town.
As for Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow, I wasn't unhappy with either deal. Both were clubhouse cancers, which is exactly what the Browns need to rid themselves of. Winslow's physical condition had deteriorated to the point, he had to push off to create separation, thus the offensive pass interference calls we came to expect from him once to twice a game. Braylon is an enigma. He may turn out to be a superstar, but I'm betting against it. He was too self-centered, and lost focus too easily to ever become a bona-fide number one receiver.
This team has a very long ways to go.
