I want to stress that I'm for all the County Offices and their employees. It seems I've been talking about the Sheriff's office the most. But if we can get the commissioners to back a temporary sales tax we can save a lot of jobs and inconvenience to the public and their safety. I just thought about another twist. If our County Offices are shutting down and our Sheriff's office won't respond to calls or patrol, then how attractive does our county look to people wanting to move here?????? Will our property values go down?????Will businesses look elsewhere?????? The commissioners have the ability to solve the problem, so why don't they????? Of all the surrounding counties, only Holmes County has the same sales tax as us. The rest are higher at 6.75 or 7%.

The Fraternal Order of Police is starting an informational campaign in reference to the status of the county budget. We are very concerned with the current financial situation of our county, and the potential damage the cuts would produce. As previously stated in other posts, the Sheriff's Office stands to lose 14 deputies if the proposed cuts to their budget are met. Not only does this create a dangerous situation for the citizens of Knox County, it also poses safety issues for the deputies. If all 14 deputy positions are cut, the Sheriff's detective division will cease to exist. Street patrol will be diminished and calls will be handled by phone, or it may take several hours before a deputy can respond to your location. The Sheriff's Office also stands to lose those deputies to other departments or professions and they take their experince with them. Replacing them with qualified deputies is hard enough, but replacing their experience is even harder, if not impossible. We feel the only way to save these positions and support other county offices is to apply a temporary 1/4% sales tax, until a more permanent solution can be made. This means that you will pay an extra 25 cents on a one hundred dollar purchase. We know that everyone is tired of being taxed, but we strongly feel that this issue is to important to just stand idly by and watch the quaility of our county slip away.

I think that aproudamerican brings up a valid point and increasing the sales tax 1/4%. It also seems that the community is becoming more unified. I am reading more positive posts on here and Mt. Vernon news' web site. It seems that people I talk to at the gym and in public seem to all think about the same. All we need to do is put a bug in the commissioners ears.

Im business owner in the eastern end of the county and I have had my home broken into, my outbuiding broken into with my four wheelers stolen, my chainsaws, various tools etc. I feel that the publicityof losing 14 deputies is inviting disaster. In a positive light my ATV was returned.
I dont understand why the comm. is refusing the quarter percent sales tax. They say they dont want to kick a man when he is down but what have they done so far? Spent 600,000 dollars on useless ground at the fairgrounds which by they way they can not validate clearly. Why do they preach green space and time and money on the parks. The say it was grant money that was unmatched. I will punt on that one but what about the time and money spent on applying for and writing the applications for those grants? Why don't they concentrate on bringing more industry to the county. I have also heard the comm. rent the horse stables at the fairgrounds for 300 dollars a year which is incredibly cheap considering horse boarding goes for 300 a month.
I see a lot of pork spending in what was once a thriving county that had a lot of promise. i urge the citizens to consider opposing canidates in the polls for the comm. offices. Especially after an incident at the CES credit union, another comm. whos math was inaccurate on the radio a lil while back. One more thought... they were quick to blame other elected officals to the economic downturn but at the end of the day who signed the checks? i also have been in contact with channels 4 and 6 to investigate... hide and watch

There are probably some areas in the sheriff's dept. that can be trimmed, but to tell county depts. to cut 20% is a problem. Look at the headlines on Knox Pages, MTV News, television or any other source. The stories everday are about crime and the courts. The commissioners should try to promote law enforcement to attract residents and businesses. I'm sure people aren't beating down doors to move to Morrow County.

When I emailed one of the commissioners with aproudamerican's questions, and my own, I also linked to this thread here on KP and asked them to read it.......

We're almost unanimous in our agreement that the increase should be implemented.....and I thought they needed to know that - the comments in this regard in the Mount Vernon News reflected the same unanimity

Hopefully they'll pay attention...........

You brought a good point that I had forgot about, the horse stalls at the fair. We need to check and see how many horses they board and how much they charge. I’ve heard the same price of 300.00 a year and that ridiculous!!! Why would they rent them so cheap????? Have the commissioners raised this to the correct price since we are in bad economic shape???? Also how much money does the fair make a year and where does that money go???? Since it is owned by the county, how much money is given to the general fund from it and how much goes to fair board member’s salary??????????????? How much money do we have to pay for upkeep on the place????

Sorry McClellan I added a “d” on the end, I was in a hurry.

If the property “we” bought for $600,000.00 + dollars on Fairground road had been purchased by a builder this is what we could have made.
54 acres= around 40 houses @ $3,000.00 a year for taxes we could have another 120,000.00 a year. Not to mention the workers needed to build and the sale of materials. But Nooooooooooo the commissioners bought the land to help the fair????????? We paid over $600,000.00 for land worth 166,000.00, which commissioner thought this was a good investment for the county????????????????????? Guess how much a year we’ll get from it now $ 0.00 Good job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oooooohhhhhhhhh - as long as you're asking the County Commissioners questions - let's ask them why Commissioner Bob Wise, who heads the Fiar Board Committee (and owns Wise Chosce) placed the HIGHEST bid for supplying propane at the fair, and won the bid, instead of the gentleman who placed the lowest bid? Hm? That little piece of information was printed in the Columbus Dispatch, but the Mount Vernon News refused to cover it.

Before you ask, yes I can back up this post with public record documents.

Never fear NRM, under the Obama administration your horses will soon be entitled to free legal representation, yes?

and who better to award the propane contract to but to the County Commissioner sitting on their Board, and who makes decisions about how much money they will receive each year, even if he DID have high bid <end sarcasm>

NRM I guess it's finally clear what your motivation is. Why you’re defending the commissioners like you are. As I see it you stated that you have 9 horses and board them at the fair. You only pay $300.00 a year for each, this equal’s $2700.00. Now if you had to board them elsewhere it would cost you 240.00 a month for each, that would be $25,920.00 a year. So I guess you’re saving about $23,220.00 a year. Is this correct?????
