I see the prosecutor has an advertisement for a kegak assistant on the county website. Didn't he just lay off an employee a month ago? What's going on there?

Larry CM had a meeting with the commissioners last week and she asked them some questions and will be posting the answers shortly. Hopefully we will know exactly where our tax money was spent and who is responsible for the shortage. I can't wait to review these answers and check them!!!

I've been reading CMs post, and can't wait to see the answers to her questions. I just do not think the commissioners have done EVERYTHING THEY can, and won't vote for a tax increase until they earn their pay. It's easy to always take more tax money, that's governments answer to everything. More money doesn't fix the problems, it just gives an entitiy more money to waste.

Larry That is the problem, they have "DONE EVERYTHING THEY CAN" with our tax money, unfortunitly it was a lot of needless, careless spending!!!! Now the taxpayers again will suffer.NOW in their infinite wisdom they will decrease police protection in the county but rest assured if you need to file a deed of visit the map dept.or such they will still be at full staff. Just remember the commissioner's phone numbers because if an officer can't respond to your call ,MAYBE THEY WILL.

The reason there is a post for the County Prosecutors office is due to his assistant taking another job. This was not the position that was just cut. The girl that left did a great job and will be missed.

The commissioners have a meeting today with the sheriff to determine his budget. My concern is that the commissioners DO have the money in other funds but are unwilling to transfer to the general fund to help all departments. Apparently the commissioners frivolous spending has caught up to them. Now to save their $55,000/year part time jobs they will make it look as if it was the department heads who bankrupted us. Ask yourself, If the other county departments were able to cut 20% without laying off personnel then apparently they were over funded before. The sheriff and the commissioners have went over his budget and they all see that he is at the bare bones but they still want more. So now just because the sheriff has the largest budget and MUST maintain the jail (LAW) He can't cut that so he will have to cut employees from the road patrol. The commissioners decided that his employees only ( not other county employees) Should take a month off without pay and give up their 3% cost of living raise. I don't have a problem if EVERY COUNTY EMPLOYEE was required to do this but to only penalize the sheriff's employees is not fair! Layoffs or 20 furlough days will dramatically decrease officers on the street.
PS The sheriff's employees were the only ones to take furlough days (7) this year, and no county employees gave up their raises this year!!!!

A few examples of Frivolous spending: Millions on construction at knox county "international" airport, $600,000.00 plus on land worth $166,660.00, about a million on "expenditures for the Heart of Ohio Trail" These are just a few of many. Aren't you glad YOUR tax money was spent on these. Don't you wonder what ever happened to all the extra property tax money we had to pay this year????

If you don't want the Sheriff's road officers cut you need to voice your opinion by calling the commissioners at (740) 393-6703. They have the money avalible they just don't want to use it because they waisted so much on non essential things..

Was or wasn't the jail built to house out of the county criminials? How is that working out, financially?

FTM The jail was built because the old one was not up to code and did not meet the requirements the state has. It was close to being shut down by the state. Now to help financially they try to get out of county inmates, but with other counties in the same financial crisis we are in they can't afford to send them here. That was when the commissioners accused the sheriff of not trying very hard to get out of county inmates. So the commissioners decided they could do better, well they didn't get any either.

Why doesn't Mr. Thatcher re-hire the one he "laid off? You know, the one who had been hired by the previous administration, had worked there almost 20 years, was excellent at her job and was just a few years short of retirement?

Seems that would be the "right" thing to do..............

Good question CM. Maybe she's already got another job or something. Wouldn't it save money because we would not have to pay her unemployment if we rehired her?

he's probably too busy spending about 35K of tax payer dollars to a law firm in Columbus, rather than paying local counsel to do what he calls "specialty" work (as regards the foreclosures, a good paralegal could do that job - it's nothing but paperwork - with legal oversight - they don't need to hire outside help, imho) - don't these guys think that the public is going to figure this stuff out? good grief

I have my notes and will be blogging off and on today and tomorrow

A few things - the Commissioners offered to take 10 percent of their pay and return it to the general fund if all other elected officials would do the same - am waiting to see if any of them step up to the plate and offer to do so

APA - the $600,000 paid for the land is on target with the assessed value - the $166K figure you're using is the 1/3 of assessed value figure that the "tax man" uses to assess tax figures - also, the fair board is paying one half of that $600,000, the county commissioners the other half, and the land stays in the name of the commissioners - more to blog on that later

I am absolutely cringing that I didn't look this up myself - need to focus more

The claim was they didn't want the fair "landlocked" - wanted room to expand

Now, the commissioners stated that they had preferred that the property purchased to go to sheriff's sale and then to bid - and then purchase it - but it was the fair board that insisted on purchasing the property before it went to such sale............

Landlocked?? how much should we spend on a one week fair? makes you wonder who is making money from the fair, it's NOT the taxpayers. All this time I thought the commissioners were in charge of our tax money, now I see it's the fair board
I'll bet the fair board won't let the taxpayers in for free will they??? How about the general fund receiving all the money from it, bet that won't happen We(taxpayers) buy their land for them, upkeep the place, provide services all from tax payer money. But again who makes the profit from it???
