It's only just begun.....
There have'nt been any democrats in the knox county commissioners office in excess of twenty years; same thing goes with the auditor's and the treasurer's offices. Those offices are responsible for the fiscal security of knox county.
Blame a democrat for our local problems? You are sadly mistaken as usual. |

| In the Columbus Dispatch Letters to the Editor, there is a Juvenile Court Judge from Jackson County asking Gov. Strickland to enact a .5 percent sales increase for two years. |

Note to NRM: Reading is a favorite pastime of mine. Just finished The Wilderness Warrior by Douglas Brinkley. It's about Theodore Roosevelt and the Crusade for America. Focuses on TR's wilderness and wildlife preservation activities while president. |

CM....the county budget is not very different from a household budget, except for property taxes, which represent a surge of revenue twice per year....the rest of the time, sales tax flows in monthly.....the county, like other counties, operates at a monthly loss most months....property taxes make it up....at the end of June, Morrow County had a 23% decline in sales tax revenues for the year...nobody can budget for that kind of drop....due to unemployment and foreclosures, property tax collections fell sharply....a double whammy...do not blame the county commissioners for this...it is not their fault....it is the Obama economy....

layoffs for county employees need not occur - you seem willing to accept those layoffs rather than pay another 25 cents for every hundred dollars spent
am hoping the commissioners aren't
playing some ridiculous "blame game" and whining 24/7 about the state of the union (the economy tanked before Obama's election) while people lose their jobs that need not be lost is unproductive and a waste of time - time better spent working together to discover solutions

In the Columbus Dispatch for 10-24-09, article about Fairfield County raising there sales tax a 1/4% for four years. Commissioners stated if their economy turns around faster that the four years they would go back to 6.25 percent. They're expected to generate $3.8 million for an entire year of collection.
Article also states the other area sales tax: Franklin, Delaware, Madison, Union Counties-6.75% Licking and Pickaway-7%
Article also states that the Sheriff there still expects to layoff 11 Deputies, but they have 143 employees.
Still think a temporary sales tax for Knox County is the answer.

I do, too
what I don't think the answer is is people finger pointing and whining 24/7 - either about monies spent who who's president - good grief - too many people sit back and complain and complain and complain - and I'm betting few of them bother to attend city council meetings, commissioner meetings, or have a CLUE about legislation passed locally - they'd rather just sit back and b*tch about this and that, rather than get off their duffs, try to learn what's going on around them, become educated as to local issues, and try to do something a about the problems we're facing.
I'm with NRM in a small way - if you're not trying to make a difference (or trying to be part of the solution), you're part of the problem. His solutions are not mine, but that particular mindset is.........apathy and whiners who expend no energy trying to improve the local financial situtation have brought our community to its present state -

This is not going to turn around, not next month, not in six months, and not next year. We entered the historical definition of a recession, 2 quarters of negative growth, in the first quarter of this year...yes, this year. Recessions, usually last around 18 months, and this one was a long time coming....with Barney Frank still king of the subslime loans, and the rest of the world no longer interested in buying our debt, this recession may yet turn into a depression.
No tempory tax, yeah, that one makes you smile, is gonna be a big enough fix to save jobs in the short or long run. Major purchases, especially with the higher prices, will just be made in another county...one, that has not increased taxes.

I would agree 1/4% is not much but, 1/4% times 0 still equals 0. Who shops or does business in Knox County?
For the last 15 plus years, we have built all of our retail ecomony in Downtown and Old Town Mt. Vernon around, the checks in the mail, opera house. We have probably lost close to 50 businessness in that length of time.
When was the last time a new industry enter Knox County?
How many business and industries have left Knox County?
Where do our city and county employees, city and county elected officials, shop? How many times have you heard, there is nothing in Knox County to buy, I'm going to Columbus, Mansfield, etc.?
A long time ago, someone decided that Knox County is only good for bedrooms, for people who work in Columbus. That mentality has helped our elected officials stop looking for new business and industries, and we don't do anything to retain the ones we have now.
To all of you running for office, how many times have you been in a business in Knox County, when you weren't asking for a donation?

FTM Come on now! You know the commissioners spent hundreds of thousands of tax payer’s money on the airport to lure in big businesses and they just spent over 600 thousand dollars for more fair ground. We have some of the best bike paths in the state. What more can they do? Now to entice people to come we’ll lay off cops…That’ll bring em. End Sarcasm

| I'm pretty sure I see plenty of Morrow County car tags at Wal-Mart. Also didin't I just read that Rolls-Royce was bringing in jobs. If the Commissioners would of let Schlabaughs buy the land by the Fairgrounds, that would of brought in more money. What was it 55 acres. That probably would have been 60 more houses for the tax base. Nothing Really Matters you should change your name to Cares About Everything. |

NRM Why is it that you think only "cops and firemen" are on public employees retirement. We are just a drop in the bucket, of the 900 plus public employees in the county's system only 55 to 60 are cops>

Let's ask the governor to pay all governmennt workers just like the military pays soldiers. No overtime, no "40 hour work week"...no comp time...pay is 100% the same, retirement is 50% of base pay after 25 years of service...rank is based on % of workers for E1 - E9...just like the military, 500 workers get 1 E9, 2 E8's, 3 E7's etc....it would equate to the average government worker making it to E4 and (about 22,000 a year and retirement at 11,000 a year).
I agree aproudamerican...let's make it happen and you said the cops and firement would support this plan...
At 20 years you get 50% and 2.5 % for everyyear after that with no cap now. So at 25 years it would be 62.5%. Also I don't know anyone who retired with 25 years from any military service who was less than an E7. If there are any they probably had bad FitReps, and/or discipline action to demotion. Usually it takes about 4-5 years for E4 then another 2-3 for E5, about 10 years total for E6 and so forth. So why would you say public employees should only get an E4 retirement after 25 years? So I say again make it happen because I would make alot more at retirement!!!!!
