I thought originally that the campaign contribution controversy just consisted of reporting violations, but after researching the law, it appears that one could be prosecuted criminally for knowingly accepting a campaign contribution from a corporate donor. In Ohio it is an unclassified misdemeanor and punishable by jail time and/or a fine.
Just some perspective for what it's worth. |

Do not be decieved...the MVN doesnt put in print MUCH of what takes place in MV...and I know of stories a report would do..then it was never allowed into print.

I notified the MTV News regarding the illegal Campaign contributions. They have chosen not to run a story on that even though the evidence is clearly there. It appears the paper doesn't want to the truth out. Does that surprise any of us??????
Maybe they simply didn’t find anything substantial that would make it worth doing a story. (I've heard that the News was researching the story--and even went so far as to conduct interviews with both Kirk and Thompson.) Have you asked the News why they didn't do a story on the topic?

| Not only can the candidate get in trouble but the corporation that donated can be prosecuted as well. It is up to the candidate to protect his contributors by knowing the law! |

So I guess my question yesterday should have been are School Board members allowed to serve on the Board while in jail? Can the jail do conference calls so they don't miss any meetings? Seriously though, if people win an election and have used illegally raised funds to do so they should not be able to retain the seat they won. What appears to be bad is that they can still gain an unfair advantage by using illegally raised funds, even if in the end they "re-pay" the funds. They still used dirty money to get elected. |

I caught the Ian Watson radio interview 10/30. The guy blew Thompsonkirk's scurrilous allegations of being unqualified out of the water; these guys are obviously out of their league. And Ian did it firmly, with class. Too bad the moderator was played like a cheap Estaban guitar by the "Akneytown Crank": the Teabagging busybody, who doesn't even live in the district, called in to sabotage the interview and harrass Watson with a stupid question about why he, personally doesn't go after delinquent property taxes for school $ The guy then claimed he "didn't know" that wasn't the school board's job to legally do that and that it's the county treasurer's duty...yeah, right. On another note, Thompson's concern about "due process" being ignored in Freshwater's case rings hollow in light of his employment at Ariel. As an executive board member there, did he speak up for the workers who were illegally fired from there for attempting to organize a union - a right under Federal law? Sorry, we taxpayers can't afford the big bucks to settle, as Ariel did. Steve probably knew that if he protested, he'd be standing in the unemployment line...without a college degree. |

Ohio Revised Code 3599.03
Use of corporation and labor organization funds for political purposes.
(B)(1) No officer, stockholder, attorney, or agent of a corporation or nonprofit corporation, no member, including an officer, attorney, or agent, of a labor organization, and no candidate, political party official, or other individual shall knowingly aid, advise, solicit, or receive money or other property in violation of division (A)(1) of this section.
(2) Whoever violates division (B)(1) of this section shall be fined not more than one thousand dollars, or imprisoned not more than one year, or both.
This is certainly a newsworthy matter, to say the very least.

I am the "moderator who was played like a cheap Esteban guitar" by the "Ankneytown Crank."
You're referring to Willie Pritchett, a caller who has as much right to call and question a guest as you or anyone else does. I think you mistook the tenor of Willie's question as being loaded, guided or otherwise nasty. Having experienced many of Willie's different moods on air, I feel certain that saying I don't think he had an agenda. He's never someone who dances around an issue. If he has something to say he usually just says it.
If you consider my willingness to take calls from the audience and allowing a listener the opportunity to weigh in as "being played like a cheap Esteban guitar," I don't know what to tell you. The same opportunities to question candidates has been afforded to everyone, and I believe was used by Mary Rugola Dye, a prominent Democratic woman who called a City Council candidate with a series of questions that I considered to have a "perspective," stealing words from David Axelrod here.
She was also allowed the opportunity to call and question School Board Candidate Paula Barone.
That's your local radio station being community minded and allowing the public to get a benefit above and beyond listening. I'll be happy to upload the audio from the Watson interview if anyone's interested in hearing it. |

I, like many others have received the mailing from Kirk and Thompson. How many people have that kind of money to throw at a school board election like these two? As I was talking to someone this week about this and made a statement about how much has been spent for a position that will only pay $1.500.00 per year, they said, do they have an axe to grind against someone. What is their agenda?
Why is Thompson afraid to state his post high-school education? Is there any? Where did he learn all of his great math skills.
We know both of these men need more reading and comprehension schooling, so they can follow directions filling out and reporting income and expenses incurred when running for an office.
I feel our school board is doing a great job, they are taking care of business and I will continue to support them for the work they do.
Why in the last paragraph of this mailing from Kirk/Thompson which states, "Please do not hesitate to contact us if we can answer any questions" but, no where in the mailing is any contact information. Yes, there is contact information for their treasurers, but not for them. I will offer a guess, they did not really want to be contacted.
My other question is; what party do they claim to be a member?
At which church do you think they and friends will be waiting on election results?

Whether you are for or against what SB posted here...fact is WE all must keep public officials accountable...whether they are in office or running for office.
I personally do not care if SB has an agenda or not...if facts have been uncovered of wrong doing..THAT is what matters to me...if Kirk or Thompson is a friend of any of you..sorry they still must be kept accountable.
as they say...dont shoot the messager...pay attention to the message...

WE all must keep public officials accountable...whether they are in office or running for office.Yes your right when we vote for a person we trust them to do the job right. I know that I want to vote for who can be trusted.I don't want a person who breaks the law to be on the school board or even a teacher over our kids.
Vote no for Kirk

It is the day before the election and I have received another expensive letter in the mail from the Kirk/Thompson campaign. The letter states that these 2 "were drawn to run for the school board" partially because "the current board lacks the business and administrative experience to get the job done" and other financial reasons. Earth to Steve Thompson........Ian Watson (current board member) managed your retirement money (through Ariel) for years when he worked at First Knox Natl Bank!!! I wonder if Thompson was able to openly discuss his concerns about Ariel's retirement money management with First Knox when he asked Karen Wright (owner of Ariel) for the $2,000 she donated to Thompson's campaign. I wonder if Karen knows Thompson used her generous donation, in part, to bash the institution managing Ariel's retirement money. I also know for a fact that Ms Wright does not allow religious posters or propaganda to be displayed in the offices or cubicles at Ariel as Ariel is a multi-cultural and diverse company. I wonder if Thompson was able to discuss with Karen that he would also be using her money to promote his own brand of religion in our schools by supporting the pushy Freshwater version of "Christianity". Finally, the most recent Kirk/Thompson campaign letter tells me that their "first job as members of the board will be to get the board's financial house in order." Mr Kirk and Mr Thompson...will that financial house look anything like the financial house of your campaign? Unitemized financial reports, a disregard for rules when raising money, alleged illegal corporate donors, gross over-spending, a "throw money at it" attitude and the list goes on. I am hopeful that Mt Vernon will be able to elect the right people for the school board and, in my opinion, Kirk and Thompson are the wrong people. Can you say tax hikes, job cuts and pay-to-play? |
