I'm with a few others here. Kirk and Thompson are runing for other reasons than they have stated. Why woudl I want anyone to beon our school board, who was and may still be on the account to raise funds to sue the school board.

Kirk nor Thompson have yet to answer any of the question put top them at the two meet, the candidates I've attended, they bounce all around but no answers.

WOW, spend over $4,000.00 and $6,000.00 for a job that pays $1,500.00. Wonder who is backing this. when was the last time this kind of money was spent for a local small town school board election.

Maybe a hidden agenda here, who's?

Well, guess what? He did teach two of mine, and the only impression he made was asking one of them how to prove she knew dinosaurs really existed. Yeah, how to prove anything exists when you have not viewed it for yourself. Both of them saw the coil used and there were no burns on any of the volunteers after the experiment or the next day. Both say he was overbearing like most coach /teachers, but so were a lot of the teachers in both the middle school and the high school. Neither the B or the C student recalled much about any bible instruction, but they also were not coached by him.

I am quite frankly, more upset at the social studies teacher who said every soldier in viet nam was a baby killer and insisted everyone old enought to vote, vote for Kerry. Yes indeed, try explaining why someone would say that about your grandfather and see how happy you are with the school system. There are more problems in the Mount Vernon school system than John Freshwater.

You also forget I am old enough to have heard bible stories in public school. I still remember the teacher reading david and goliath and telling the first grade class, this shows you can do anything, you just have to put your mind and will to it, no matter how small you are, you can defeat the biggest foe.

You do like to miss the point, now make up your mind, was it about the bible on the desk or not?

I would like to think the failure to follow the directives led to the firing, but the testimony by the other teachers and students fails to make that case. Since none of the school board members chose to stand up and state the reasons for the firing, this is still heading to the courts where they will have to testify. New members or not, this is not going to go away anytime soon and picking candidates based on trying to figure out if they are anti/pro Freshwater does little to address the rest of the problems that led to this mess or even offer any hope of it ending any time soon.

We all know that if the school board members had testified, they would have been unable to participate in future votes about the Freshwater matter - that point was made in their legal brief - why does everyone keep harping on that issue as if it's a valid one? am soooooooooooo confused

oh, and the "problem" is that Freshwater believes he has a right to ignore state and federal laws and teach religion in his science class - Thompson, by supporting Freshwater, obviously does too - and ignoring that Freshwater was thumbing his nose at state and federal law for so many year s is what got us into this mess.......we certainly don't need a School Board Member that will perpetuate such a mindset......

If some wish that religion were to be taught in schools, head to capitol hill and fight to change the law; but to believe you have a right to ignore it?

unacceptable

Maybe becase that 'point' was not 'valid'. The only reason they were not called to testify at the hearing is because no court has the authority to compel them to do so there or then, but they will all be placing their hands on the bible in a court house sometime sooner or later depending on how much time it takes to get there.

yeah - we really need to get rid of that practice - like putting your hand on the bible will ensure someone will tell the truth -

that's tooooooooooooo funny

p.s. did you read any of the legal briefs at ALL? you should......they're on the internet - "facts matter" you know

My source for the Haschak payoff is the Mansfield News Journal, late March, early April, 2008 I believe that the News Journal was the first to break the story and a few days later, Mt. Vernon News.

What I had forgot, according to the testimony of their son, Joe. The Barone family, knew 6 to 8 years in advance about the problem concering Freshwater, and did nothing about it. Silence Gives Consent. Also forgot, a Zack Dennis, testified against Freshwater. I don't know if there is any relationship to the Dennis familly that got the money.

Barone statement was, I don't care what the court says, I'm going behind close doors and get Freshwater.

You are talking about apples and oranges, when talkng consulting firms. The board hired some rinky dink firm to do an investagation, and they totally fumbled the ball.

I believe that there was probable cause, to fire Freshwater. But, by the Mickey Mouse way, the board handled it, there was not enough, if any, documented evidence to support their case. On top of that, they stomped on his rights, which has 99% people so upset.

Yes, indeed in court, unlike public venues, facts will matter. Other teachers using the device and testifying they have a bible on their desk are facts that will matter.

Since 4 family members will be voting in knox county, including the 2 that survived Freshwater's class, any information about the candidates would be helpful, but unfortunately, this has become yet another stage for the anti/pro forces rumor mill surrounding the Freshwater debacle.

Did I hear correctly last night, that one of those running was inspired to do something about the problems in the Mount Vernon education system after a meeting with the superintendent 8 years ago, and it only took six years to sink in. So he started two years ago going to the Board of Education meeting. When did the Freshwater problem surface?

The matter with the Tesla coil was officially resolved back in January 2008. The mother of the child told the superintendent that she didn't want Freshwater to be fired. (The allegation of the burn was never collaborated by any source outside of the Dennis family.) Both the principal and assistant principal signed a letter saying the matter was over.

In fact, that's false: The use of the Tesla coil by Mr. Freshwater on students has been corroborated in sworn testimony by several; witnesses, even by Ben Neilson, who changed his story in midstream about the shape and size of the burn but never denied that Zachary had been burned. And I seem to recall that in public statements Mr. Freshwater agreed that he used the Tesla coil on students, and that it made marks.

By the way, for the info of the Editor, a Tesla coil is not an "electrostatic" device like, say, a Van de Graaf generator that one might see in at COSI making peoples' hair stand on end. A Tesla coil is a dynamic device in the sense that current flows continuously while the arc is active.

If memory serves me correctly, that device was called a BD-10A electrostatic generator, was it not?

ClockStopper,

The investigative report, if memory serves me correctly, referred to it as a BD-10A electrostatic generator, did it not?
